Meet Amy: Amy Novatt, M.D., FACOG, is a board-certified obstetrician-gynecologist with over 35 years of experience caring for women. After years in the corporate medical world, practicing both surgical and in-office gynecological care, Dr. Amy built a smaller, more personal practice — one where she has time to really listen and focus on the bigger picture: her patients' lifestyle, whole-body health, and the chronic issues that often get overlooked.

Dr. Amy combines science, empathy, and decades of expertise to support women at every stage of life. Through in-depth conversations, she and her patients figure out what's really going on — physically and emotionally — and build strategies that fit real life, not just a textbook.

She has a special focus on menopause, sexual health and dysfunction, and thriving before and after cancer, integrating lifestyle and medicine to bring clarity and comfort through treatment. She's also happy to talk about chronic vaginal infections, painful periods, and other issues that quietly take a toll on daily life.

Dr. Amy is the host and creator of the podcast GynoCurious, exploring what it means to be a healer and to be healed. She is also a speaker and retreat leader across the U.S.

In Episode 48 of Sanctuary's Coffee & Conversation podcast, Dr. Amy Discusses brain and mood changes during transitions to perimenopause/menopause, menopause therapies, how to weed through information overload that is often confusing and misleading, and much more!

Myrna Beth Haskell, executive editor, asked Amy about her journey as a physician, her specialties, and her current consulting practice.

You have had over 35 years of experience as a gynecologist. Is there an “aha moment” you’d like to share?

‘Aha moments’ have occurred throughout my career. With deep listening, even after many years, I continue to learn from my patients. Perhaps the most significant moment, however, was as a medical student rotating through the OB-GYN department at St. Vincent's Hospital in the West Village of New York City (now gone). I saw an elderly woman in the ER who was slowly dying from an undiagnosed pelvic cancer — she had been living alone, with no relationship to a gynecologist due to a lack of access and information. That's when I realized I wanted to spend my career helping women avoid this kind of painful and isolating experience.
Testimonial
"I am so incredibly grateful for Dr. Novatt's services! I was entering perimenopause and felt very lost, mainly since my then doctors were strictly looking at my hormone levels. Dr. Novatt was supportive, sincere, and actually LISTENED to what I had to say. She was super thorough, looking at the entire picture of my health (both physical and emotional), not just a couple of symptoms or labs. In short, Dr. Novatt is the complete opposite of the 'doctor factories' where you are seen for 10 minutes and sent home with a prescription; she is a whole health medical professional. She is warm, empathetic and invested in your wellness.” ~ Jess

How would you describe your relationship with your patients?

Collaborative, supportive, individualized and respectful.

For years you provided full-scope gynecologic care. Today, you provide consultative care. What types of services does this include?

In an hour-long, conversational initial visit, I use deep listening and expert navigation to gather data from a patient's siloed clinicians, along with her personal story and concerns, to strategize healing modalities and plans. Services provided include menopause therapy, sexual health interventions, microbiome support, and movement and nutritional guidance.

Do you believe traditional medical treatments and alternative modalities can work well alongside one another?

There are so many diverse ways in which we heal as individuals; I support care that is both allopathic and complementary as long as the pros, cons and science are thoroughly discussed.

Is there anything you do differently now compared to when you first started your practice?

I tend to share a bit more about my personal experiences with healing and health now that I have aged. I want my patients to know I have worked through illness and menopause just like them!
Please share an important lesson you've learned over the course of your career and how this lesson has helped you to move forward and thrive in your practice today.

There are many universal themes in women's health and diagnosis that are well-defined. But if you listen closely to each woman, her story is unique, personal, and always important — and her health strategy must address her as an individual, including her fears, concerns, and personal history.

Please share a bit about your popular podcast, GynoCurious, and the inspiration behind its launch.

GynoCurious has been a wonderful adventure. Having started just over a year ago, I speak with women who are healers or are being healed, on topics ranging from endometriosis, infertility, and cancers to complementary healing modalities like acupuncture, massage, and movement therapies.

When I was first asked to create a podcast, I called my kids and told them, ‘Isn't it funny. I know nothing about this and am completely intimidated by the idea.’ And they said, ‘That's exactly why you must do it!’ From the mouths of babes, GynoCurious was born!

I love sharing women's stories with listeners who span the globe and are curious, just like me, about how to heal.

Where do you find sanctuary?

I find sanctuary outdoors, at the beach, in the mountains, and in the gardens around my home. Sanctuary comes to me with movement, music and books. Time with family and friends brings me joy.
