SARA RECEIVES STATEWIDE AWARD

Sara was named the SDACTE Postsecondary Professional of the Year. Her work in promoting career and technical education is creating lasting impact across the region.

As Director of the Eastern South Dakota Perkins Consortium, what would you say is the most important initiative you've helped implement?

One of the most important initiatives I’ve helped lead is the intentional building of strong community and industry partnerships. These relationships allow us to keep technical curriculum relevant and responsive to the real needs of today’s workforce. A highlight of this work is our annual consortium meeting, where educators, industry leaders, and state partners come together for hands-on learning, meaningful conversations, and professional development. These gatherings create space for teachers to explore emerging trends, share best practices, and access the equipment, resources, and support they need to deliver the highest-quality career and technical education possible.

Do you feel students get enough career guidance in high school?

Yes and no. The narrative around Career and Technical Education (CTE) is definitely changing…and in a very good way. We’ve made great strides in helping students see that there are many high-quality pathways to success, whether that’s a four-year degree, a two-year program, or direct entry into the workforce. Schools and communities are doing more than ever to integrate career exploration into the high school experience. That said, there’s always room to grow. Career guidance isn’t a one-time conversation; it needs to be an ongoing process that evolves as students discover their interests and strengths. The more we can connect students to real-world experiences, mentors, and industry partners, the better prepared they’ll be to make confident choices about their future.

As both a mother of school-age children and an educator, how can schools do better to teach the skills children need to succeed in a professional environment?

I think it starts with kindness, and it starts at home. Families lay the foundation by teaching respect, empathy and responsibility, and schools build on that by giving students chances to practice those skills every day. Teamwork, problem solving, and clear communication can be taught in the classroom through group projects, coursework, and real world experiences, but when kids learn to be kind and work well with others, they are better prepared for any career.
As a Board member of the Harrisburg School District, how do you hope to make a difference?

I hope to make a difference by ensuring every student has the tools and opportunities they need to thrive. Serving on the Board allows me to bring together my professional experience in education with my perspective as a parent. I want to support innovative teaching, meaningful community partnerships, and programs that prepare students — not just academically — but for life in a changing world. Our district is full of passionate educators, dedicated families, and resilient students, and I am proud to be part of a team working to help every learner succeed and reach their full potential.

About Sara
Dr. Sara Vande Kamp is an educator, mentor, and newly elected (2025) School Board Member in the Harrisburg School District. She also serves as the Director of the Eastern South Dakota Perkins Consortium, guiding Career and Technical Education (CTE) across 35 school districts. Her perspective as both an education leader and a parent in Harrisburg schools strengthens her commitment to helping students and families thrive. Passionate about mentorship and innovation in education, she volunteers with various organizations including leadership programs and church ministries. Sara lives in Sioux Falls with her husband, Kendall, and their two daughters, Ivy and Rose, and loves spending time together as a family and meeting friends for coffee.

About Vanda Gallery
Located in New Rochelle, New York, Vanda Gallery is an inclusive space that celebrates diverse artistic voices and encourages creativity, collaboration and growth. Founded by fine artist Zahra Jlayer, the gallery opened in October 2023 and has since been hosting unique exhibitions, community events, and workshops. The gallery’s mission is to foster meaningful connections, sparking a dialogue that transcends the traditional gallery experience.
"I've attended two exhibitions at Vanda Gallery, and the atmosphere is always electric. I recently caught up with Zahra to ask about the gallery's founding and her experiences over the past two years. It's clear she's excited for the future."

~ Myrna Beth Haskell, Executive Editor, Reports

What was the inspiration behind the October 2023 founding of Vanda Gallery?

New Rochelle was really in a growth period at that time. A lot of people were moving here, and there was no active gallery. I needed a place to show my own work, and I also wanted to help other artists in the area. I wanted to serve the community, so that residents didn’t need to go to Manhattan to see beautiful artworks. I also wanted to build bridges with communities north and south of New Rochelle.

As a gallerist, have there been any surprises over the past two years…things that were unexpected?

I suppose one surprise was how many hats I have to wear. I didn’t know how many things I would have to cover. This is a [pivotal] time for galleries in general. Some are going out of business. However, there are other artist-owned galleries that are opening. It’s important for people to see art in person in order to connect with it on a [visceral] level. At the same time, you need to be aware of technologies — I’m trying both the old school way of doing things and new ways of doing things. I’m happy about the way things are going so far. I’m hoping my gallery will become even more established. And I plan to continue to support other artists.
About Zahra Jlayer
Zahra Jlayer is a multifaceted visionary who stands at the intersection of art and science. As the founder and curator of Vanda Gallery, Zahra has become a driving force behind the local art scene, creating a haven for artists and art enthusiasts alike. Zahra’s artistic pursuits have not been without challenges. Balancing the demands of medical school and a burgeoning career in pathology, she tenaciously clung to her love for painting. Even during the busiest times, her desire for artistic expression remained alive. In curating exhibitions for her father, she found a way to feed her craving for art while nurturing a space for the creative voices of others. Zahra’s journey is a testament to the belief that art, in all its forms, has the power to heal, inspire and unite communities.

Erin has trained with some of the world’s foremost experts in diet theories, nutrition, exercise, and healthy lifestyle management.
What are the various types of “well-being” that you feel fall under the umbrella of holistic wellness?

Wellness isn’t about the absence of illness; instead, it’s about the presence of life in the mind, body and soul. To me, holistic wellness is the intertwining of physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well-being, each one supporting the others. However, wellness looks different for everyone, so depending on where we are in life, one area may need more attention than another, and that is perfectly natural.

What are some ways to practice and sustain emotional wellness?

While there are countless ways to practice and sustain emotional wellness, my top recommendation is to make self-care a priority. This can take many forms:
  • Practicing mindfulness by pausing to notice your thoughts, feelings, and the present moment
  • Cultivating gratitude to build mental resilience for tough times
  • Setting healthy boundaries based on your values
  • Making time for hobbies and activities that you enjoy
  • Scheduling regular exercise to support your mind and body

How is your book different from other self-help books?

I don’t believe there is a one-size-fits-all approach for achieving wellness because each person’s journey is unique. My book is an evergreen guide to help readers develop and design their own personal wellness path. It breaks down strategies into simple, practical steps and offers tools such as self-reflection exercises, a values assessment, planning lists, action items, and nourishing recipes. As a person’s life evolves, the book serves as a trusted companion for reassessing and realigning your wellness plan.
How long have you been practicing the guidance you give others in your book? How has it changed your life?

My passion for wellness began at a young age and started to take shape during my college years. As my research and education in the field grew, I formulated a personal wellness plan, rooted in many of the same principles I share in my book. Because wellness is so individual, my plan will not look the same as others and, over the years, I’ve had to adapt it to fit different seasons of my life. What remained constant, though, is my commitment to returning to that path. I’ve been practicing this approach for more than twenty years, and it has transformed my life, not in terms of material wealth, but in the richness of contentment, happiness and love.

“I had the opportunity to visit Pam Krimsky at her studio as she was setting up for Highland Open Studio tours on Friday, October 3. We sat down for a cup of coffee to chat about her work and the upcoming studio tour. Just as I was leaving, we walked through her beautiful gardens, and she cut some fresh flowers for me to take home.”

Do you have a plan before you put your brush to paper?

Sometimes I paint from imagination or from my pencil drawings. When I paint landscapes outdoors, I open my palette, and the painting comes to me in different ways. It comes together from what I’m feeling, from everything in my surroundings. As soon as I stop knowing what to do…I fold up my supplies. Sometimes I continue to work on a piece if I feel it’s not quite right. I go back to a painting when I see something that feels a bit off. I’ll add or change something.

What is your current focus?

Right now, I’m going outdoors to paint. I can’t tell you how much fun I’m having! The colors are wonderful this time of year. I also love to paint outdoors in the spring. Summer is too hot for me, and the winter is too cold. The choice of subject matter is essential. I have to be turned on when I’m painting, or it just doesn’t work.

In general, what are your inspirations?

Dance, musical performances, and nature are always inspirations.

Your sketches are wonderful.

I have so many of them. I was in a group show at the Sketchbook Gallery in Saugerties, New York, titled “Sketchbooks: Working Out Ideas.” The book you’re holding was in that show.

Strawbery Banke Museum
"This is the best outdoor, historical museum I've visited for a number of reasons. First, the museum does not stick to a particular century. Instead, it shows life throughout the history of the Puddle Dock neighborhood. The Shapley-Drisco-Pridham House shows domestic settings from both the 1790s and the 1950s. Many of the homes sit on their original site. The roleplayers are extremely knowledgeable. At the Wheelwright House, we watched a demonstration of how food was prepared in the 18th century over coals in a cast iron cook pot. The meal of the day was a meat pie. Also interesting was the Walsh House, which was unusual because guests were able to use all the items in the house — everything from kitchen items to lying on the beds. A special art exhibit celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Seacoast African American Cultural Center (SAACC) was on display at the Rowland Gallery. SAACC is the first Black arts and culture center in the state of New Hampshire. And it was delightful to see so many young girls dressed as fairies attending the world's largest Fairy House Festival that afternoon. The Portsmouth Fairy House Tour features over a hundred fairy houses of all shapes, sizes and designs. This annual, family-friendly event features fairy-inspired performances. This is just one of many events held at the museum. There really is so much to do and see here. I'm providing just a brief glimpse."

About Strawbery Banke Museum
The site of 37 historic structures and 13 gardens, the Strawbery Banke Museum (British spelling in 17th century) is unique amongst outdoor history museums in preserving a complete neighborhood’s evolution of over 350 years, with most of the historic houses on their original sites. The historic buildings range from elegant mansions to working-class homes, a colonial tavern that welcomed both Patriots and Loyalists, a 1940s corner store, and a cooper’s shop. Roleplayers speak from a historical perspective, meaning that they will only talk about the time in which their character lived. The costumes, props, and demonstrations they work into their interpretation are all period-appropriate.
Puddle Dock Neighborhood History
In 1623, English colonists established a settlement along what is now the New Hampshire coast along the Piscataqua River and named it “Strawbery Banke.” The name likely comes from the abundant wild strawberries growing along the banks of the river. The neighborhood grew through cycles of maritime prosperity. In 1958, a group of concerned citizens banded together to preserve the 10-acre area known as “Puddle Dock.” Strawbery Banke, Inc., was formed. This region has a deep history of seasonal gatherings by Indigenous peoples. Archeologists uncovered pieces of pottery, stone tools, and tent holes that demonstrate the presence of the Abenaki. For over 12,000 years they visited the Seacoast seasonally for hunting, fishing, and food preparation.

Jimmy's Jazz & Blues Club
"While in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, for a short respite in late September, my husband and I happened upon a great music venue. Jimmy's Jazz & Blues Club (locally known as Jimmy's) is a diverse space, incorporating a first-floor art gallery and a supercool music lounge. We heard that an Amy Winehouse tribute band was playing one evening, but with prior dinner reservations, we opted to just drop by more than halfway through the show. Aaron, the club's friendly doorman, allowed us to take a peek at the sold-out performance after hearing we'd send a shout-out in Sanctuary. The Winehouse Project pays homage to the late Amy Winehouse, and from what we observed, the audience was delighted by the performance. This tribute show, with performances scheduled throughout New England and beyond, includes Amy Winehouse's critically acclaimed hits. The band is comprised of nine musicians and is fronted by Lisa Kay, whose swagger imitated the late artist expertly. As a huge Winehouse fan, I was in heaven. The interior has been expertly designed, too. The award-winning renovation was created by Andrew Sidford. Next time, we will attend a complete show. I recommend checking the lineup at this club if you're in the area. Advance reservations are a must for popular shows."

More About Jimmy's
Brothers Michael and Peter Labrie have created a one-of-a-kind venue, which held its grand opening in September 2021. The club aims to honor Portsmouth’s history and cultural traditions. The building is the site of a local YMCA from the early 1900s and boasts a first-floor art gallery, brick walls, and swanky, award-winning design. As a music venue, it is known for its acoustics and performances by top-tier jazz and blues artists. Although, the cuisine is not a second thought. Chef Brian Stuart serves up an innovative menu sourcing local ingredients. The venue also hosts private events and celebrations.
