In business, things move fast, and it’s easy to overlook that bookkeeping is an ongoing task that often gets left behind." ~ Mary Therese Yamamoto |
When did you first get interested in bookkeeping?
When I started working in New York City in 2002, I spent time in many back offices in their accounting departments. I was later placed at an interior design firm, where I was hired permanently and learned all about what running a business from the back end looked like. Around 2007, I knew I was ready to go off on my own and help small businesses with their books. Bookkeeping was in my blood, and I knew I’d be good at it.
What are your specialties and strengths?
I’m financially conservative, but I am known for my personal touch, and I’ve built many relationships over the years. I get to know my clients well, and I am able to level with them one on one. I specialize in smaller businesses, and I like to work with creatives.
Do you work with a team?
I work with a team of seven in-house and three virtual assistants. We are growing, too! Our Purchasing and Procurement service is very popular as it helps the business owner focus more on their core service while we take care of the timely tasks on the back end. They are essential to my clients’ businesses, but it does not light them up.
What are the services you provide?
I provide daily accounting, deposits to software (Quickbooks, Studio Designer), bank and credit card reconciliations, sales tax filing, client invoicing, procurement (purchasing), accounts payable and accounts receivable, as well as CFO advisory services.
You work with architects, interior designers, and other creatives. What are some of the industry-specific challenges for these sectors?
Some of the industry-specific challenges include: charging their worth, familiarity with money, saving the right amount of money for overhead and taxes, consistent business income to keep year to year numbers running.
It must be daunting to keep up with the ever-changing tax laws and requirements. How do you do it?
My biggest tax priority is sales tax and updating rate changes. As far as corporate expenses, I encourage clients to hold a certain percent based on what their CPA suggests in a separate savings account to ensure there are no surprises
How does hiring a bookkeeper save money?
We keep the business running on a monthly cycle of money in and money out. When clients aren’t paying attention to what’s happening in their business accounts, they are subject to a variety of potential landmines: mistakes on billing, clients not paying, fraudulent charges, late tax filings, etc. Having a good full-service bookkeeper like MTY Bookkeeping in your corner streamlines the process.
How would you describe your style as it concerns client relationships? Do you get to know your clients on a personal level?
I’m your business’s biggest cheerleader. I love seeing my clients succeed, and I truly enjoy being a part of that. I go above and beyond for them, knowing how important it is to feel supported in business. Owning a business can be scary at times, and I’m just like them in some cases. I have had clients for over 15 years now, and I love that. We’ve gone through weddings, having kids, family deaths, and other life changes, and I feel that’s really special. I do have times that I feel like a therapist, but that’s part of me knowing what the business is about.
Are you detail-oriented or strategically minded?
I would say that I’m strategic by nature. I’ve built this over time as markets have changed and trends have come and gone. My key strategy: know your numbers and build profit from that starting point. Taking small steps to increase profit can be really fun, and this can be noticeable within months of working together.
What do you consider the most important thing business owners need to know about money management?
Business owners need to fully understand how much it costs to run their business. I’ve said it before, but this is key to me. I also explain to clients that cutting corners costs in the long run. I’ve seen this in a lot of companies I’ve helped because I’ve cleaned up messes from other bookkeepers. I also tell clients that they shouldn’t be hesitant to ask questions. I’d rather they understand what we’re helping them do and be thoroughly engaged in the process.
Where do you find sanctuary?
I find sanctuary anywhere near water, and my happy place is the sunrise on a beach. It makes sense that I would also be a water fitness instructor because I can't seem to stay away from water for too long! I practice daily meditation and self-hypnosis as well.
