Susan M. Rostan, MFA, Ed.D.
Contributor
SUSAN is a visual artist and has an MFA from Long Island University, where she studied with acclaimed abstract painters Stan Brodsky and Robert Yasuda. She received her doctorate from Columbia University, where she studied gifted education. Susan has directed her art school since 1970 and has been an adjunct professor at Hofstra University's School of Education. She has meticulously researched the creative behavior of artists, scientists and children as well as their artistic development, publishing well-received articles in The Journal of Creative Behavior, the Creativity Research Journal, and chapters in several books on creativity. These interwoven experiences give Susan a unique perspective for witnessing, exploring, documenting and writing insightfully about the real-world concerns and needs of individuals engaged in artistic development.
Susan is a lifelong artist whose abstract paintings have been shown in many Long Island galleries and are prized among local collections. She is a National Association of Women Artists signature member, historian, and the author of NAWA's blog, NAWA Luminaries, the Substack A Passion for Art, and in-depth interviews of exemplary women in the arts for Sanctuary magazine. The author of Digging: Lifting the Memorable from Within the Unthinkable, about her husband's family surviving the Holocaust, she is currently working on a narrative biography of the abstract landscape painter Stan Brodsky.
Susan resides in Woodbury, Long Island, New York, and Washington, Massachusetts, with her husband, Robert, and her mixed-breed, Elize.
Statement: Writing for Sanctuary offers significant opportunities to engage with women who are making a difference in our art communities. In-depth interviews about their interests, career development, and passions inspire me, and I hope they inspire my readers as well.
