Please share advice you received very early in your career — something you continued to embrace throughout your years as a professional.

"My band director, Bill Wiggins, taught me to keep things simple. This was his way of teaching me new things. He told me about a professor who made things complicated for him — that if his professor had just kept things simple, he would have understood [as a student]. So, he taught me to not make things so complicated. This is also a way you can think about life. When I was learning my scales, I thought of it as just a modulation. Today, I always break things down. I try to make everything simple."

"Working professionals dissuaded me about becoming an artist. I think they knew what I know now, which is this: If you don’t have to do this for a living, don't. I accept the life I live, and the sacrifices it entails, because being an artist became inevitable for me. As much as I try to resist this kind of magical thinking, this career path found me. Most of my life could be defined as my trying to avoid the inescapable. Every time I’ve attempted to develop another career, usually big shifts have happened in my life. These seismic happenings have allowed me to continue generating enough income to keep my head above water with only a camera in my hand."

"When you make art in any genre or medium, you really have to go all in – otherwise, you would probably be happier and have a better life working as an accountant. It takes quite a long time to develop serious artistic skills and a particular personal style; but on the rare occasion when it works, it’s definitely worth the while. Miles Davis once said that there is nothing more gratifying than waking up in the morning and knowing that you’re about to create something that wasn’t there before."
