2020"FOCUS ON YOUTH":
FEATURED EMERGING ARTIST
Painter and Draftswoman:
Imani Jones
~~~
Imani Jones is an oil painter and draftswoman of the human figure. Her work delves into the alchemical transformations of self, Blackness, womanhood, sexuality and eroticism that affect the temporal world around her as well as her internal world. Imani is inspired by German expressionism, hip-hop culture, and Afrofuturism.
She was born in Poughkeepsie, NY and earned her BFA in Painting from Maine College of Art and Design (MECA). While attending MECA, Imani won “Best in Show” for her submission to the senior art exhibit. She also won the Persis, Harold and Deborah Bates Arts Initiative Scholar award. Future plans... Imani’s future plans include applying for juried competitions as well as residencies to help her grow and mature into a more seasoned painter and creative. |
What inspires you?
German expressionism, Fauvism and Afrofuturism are the art movements that have been a huge inspiration to me. These movements inspired me because of their intense use of color, how paintings could be a form of psychoanalysis for the self and for others, and to paint for future generations.
How long have you been interested in art?
I have always been interested in art and would draw my own characters. But I just didn't know what to do with my skill. When I was really pushed and began to hone my skills, I became a painter and a draftswoman of my personal human experience and of the experiences of those around me.
