2020 "FOCUS ON YOUTH":
FEATURED EMERGING ARTIST
Photographer:
Sasha Fraser
~~~
Sasha Fraser grew up in Woodstock, NY. She will be a freshman at Bard College this fall. She appreciates the many opportunities and resources she has had through homeschooling, but she is excited to dive into the classes and resources available to her at the college level.
Sasha has already had work chosen for shows and events. Two of her photos were accepted to a juried, teen art show at The Wired Gallery (High Falls, NY) and were exhibited throughout May 2020. Selected photos were also chosen for an exhibition and sale this fall at the Jewish Federation of Ulster County’s “Fall for Art” event that supports regional not-for-profits. Photography isn’t Sasha’s only creative pursuit. She is passionate about ballet, and has taken classes four times a week since she was four years old. She recently participated in a virtual recital and three outdoor, masked performances at local senior residences. She also enjoys oil painting. Two of her paintings were accepted to the St. Luke’s 5th Annual Art Show in 2018. |
Future plans…
Sasha will be attending Bard College in the fall, but she is not certain what her career path will be. Besides photography, painting and ballet, her interests include engineering and the interconnectedness between science, history and geography - particularly historical events which are products of geographical constraints and technological developments. Sasha has always been interested in how and why things work as well as finding out-of-the-box solutions to solving problems.
When did you first get interested in photography?
I picked up my parents' camera a few years ago, and I never put it down. I love that photography allows me to capture, preserve and share my perspective of the world. In 2018, my parents bought me my first camera for my birthday.
Do you know ahead of time that something will make a great shot...or have your best shots surprised you?
I think it has definitely been a combination of both.
You have some incredible wildlife photos! Do you have an interesting story to tell about how you got a particular shot?
The story of how I took the photo of the hyena is quite interesting. My parents and I were on a family vacation in Namibia. I had been given my own camera right before the trip, so I was taking tons of photos of everything that we saw. It was late in the afternoon, and you are not supposed to be out in the park at night. However, we decided that we were going to stop at one last watering hole. While sitting in the car, we suddenly spotted a group of young hyenas emerging from an underground den to play and lounge around. Many people do not care about seeing hyenas when they visit the park – they’re looking for elephants, lions,
giraffes, rhinos, and buffalo. I saw this as a fantastic opportunity.
