Sanctuary has been following Spanish oil painter Ángeles Pomata in social media for quite some time. Her unique landscapes drew the attention of Myrna Haskell, executive editor, who contacted her and asked her to discuss her style and inspirations.
How would you describe your style?
I would define it as a very particular vision of gentle realism. Compared to realism that highlights dark characteristics or harsh aspects of existence, my style aims to be kind to my subjects and highlight what is good in them and their environments, even when they are difficult. This means that the result is not exactly figurative. Color takes center stage, just as it does in nature, which is the best example of a radiant reality. What do you appreciate about working with oil? Its plasticity and versatility. I like everything about oil painting, from the various textures it allows to the solidity of its colors. It happens to me with oil as it happens to carpenters and cabinetmakers with wood, especially when it is of quality — the mere fact of working with those materials is already an enjoyment. |

The natural world is obviously an inspiration for you - rolling hills, countryside, trees, etc. But your unique color palette provides a whimsical perspective. Anything you'd like to say about this?
Through color I incorporate what the environments I paint make me feel, and with the combination of both, I want to express a message of strength and vitality in the face of adversity, of confidence in the future. They are the keys to a full life; and in my work, I try to inspire encouragement, serenity and hope in the viewer.

The composition of your pieces is interesting, drawing attention equally to foreground, middle ground and background. Do you take photos and work indoors, or do you prefer en plein air?
I spend a lot of time admiring beautiful landscapes outdoors. I let myself be soaked by them, as to say, by the aromas of flowering trees or by the unusual light in this wonderful corner of the coast. But I like to paint with intimacy and that is why I take photographs to later be able to compose my works in my studio.

Please name a woman artist or two who has been an inspiration for your work or whom you particularly admire. I love the work of Olga Wisinger-Florian. She combines delicacy and strength in an extraordinary way. I also appreciate Ethel Carrick Fox who conveys an elegance in the choice of objects, in light, and in the use of color that I am passionate about. In "Back to Real," we find a woman who has become part of the landscape that surrounds her. Please describe the inspiration behind this piece. The work is called 'Back To Real' because it is possible to get out of reality, and when that happens, it is essential to regain contact with it. The environment she finds herself in is real in the sense that it is kind, it is true, and it is beautiful. It would be possible that she was in a real environment and was not part of it, but in this case, she is part of that real environment because internally she is also in reality. She incorporates the kind, the true, and the beautiful. What is outside it and what is inside it are in harmony. |

Are there any groups, organizations or galleries that specifically support women artists in your hometown?
I consider Madrid my hometown. I grew up there and lived a large part of my life there until I decided to leave the city and move to Cabo de Gata. In Madrid, I know that there are some organizations like this.

Where do you find sanctuary?
In my case, sanctuary is nature, especially the sea. It can be seen reflected in my work because it plays a fundamental role in my life. It is an environment that I always want to return to and from which I cannot spend much time away.

Ángeles M. Pomata, an artist based in Spain, came to oil painting as a visitor and settled. What lies between is a passion for the materials involved in the creative process and excitement for the expressive possibilities of the painting.
Ángeles came to art free of preconceptions and is still learning without them, with realistic technique to simplicity, concept, and color. As time passed, her portfolio grew more colorful and less attached to the existing. As a former clinical psychologist, she has known harshness and hideousness, and she consciously avoids both in her work, instead focusing on beauty, kindness and good. Knowing the healing power of beauty on a frail soul, and even more, on a strong one, she tries to add her bit. Ángeles shares, "I approach every piece as a new attempt to solve a teaser and capture an idea. When I perceive a certain harmony in it, then I’m done. In a word, I aim to capture reality as I see it, always towards what it is, with its own field of possibilities, hopes and magic, and then I share it with the viewer." |
