Award-Winning Photographer:
John Manno
~~~
After graduating from Boston University where he studied film and photography, John Manno moved to New York City where he assisted several commercial photographers before embarking on his own career in 1977. For the next four decades, he worked from his studio in the Flatiron District, and his work for advertising agencies and magazines was seen internationally. Primarily a still life photographer, John’s artistic photos take advantage of the skills he developed throughout his career. As the field of commercial photography changed dramatically with the advent of digital technology and the internet, he began spending more time and energy expressing himself artistically. John first exhibited in 2004, and continues to show his work throughout the U.S. John is always making images from his home in Brooklyn, where he has been living for the past 32 years. |
John's Process:
"People are often surprised when I tell them that these are photographs of places that don’t exist. They often think I’ve arranged objects in a real room, when actually these are photographs of small dioramas that I build. My process is simple: I have a library of thousands of photos of architectural elements such as doors, arches, walls, windows and all kinds of interesting parts of buildings. I also have as many images of things that can be used as details or props. Then, I sit down at my computer and choose which photos I want to use, and I print them at the appropriate sizes and carefully cut them out. The diorama is built from these images - they are actually very small sets, which I light and re-photograph as a unique entity."
