SHEILA HECHT : Abstract Painter
Sheila Hecht was born and raised in New York City. She knew she was an artist from an early age, and she shares that she has always been an abstract painter. From the time she created her first painting, her natural response has been to convey the underlying feelings associated with objects rather than to portray them realistically.
Sheila earned both a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in fine art from Queens College, where she studied with John Ferren and Louis Finkelstein. For many years, she taught studio art at the secondary level in the New York City school system. As a teacher, she gained great satisfaction from exposing students to their own creativity, and in return, their vitality, spontaneity, humor and energy stimulated her own growth as an artist. During the past decade, Sheila’s abstract paintings and mixed-media constructions have been exhibited with increasing frequency in commercial galleries, museums, and non-profit and corporate spaces. Recent solo shows have included the Galeria Nacional Museum in Costa Rica and The Berkeley Gallery, Berkeley College, NYC. In May 2012, she had her sixth solo exhibition titled "Split Second Decisions" at the well-respected Chelsea Noho Gallery. Sheila has also participated in a number of group shows: the Hammond Museum, Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, NY, Masur Museum of Art in Monroe, LA, the Nassau County Museum of Art in Roslyn, NY, the Art Students League in New York City and Iona College in New Rochelle, NY. |
