Mary Therese Yamamoto:
Founder of CannActive Life |
Meet Mary Therese: Mary Therese Yamamoto is founder of CannActive Life, a company focused on educating and encouraging an active lifestyle and plant-based recovery methods. She created CannActive Life in 2019 after months of using CBD to help her mobility issues and wanted to learn more and share her findings with others.
Studying the Cannabis plant and all of its benefits has been an adventure for this accounting services-trained entrepreneur. Mary Therese is certified by the Cannabis Coaching Institute as an Educator, and you can catch her speaking at one of her "Green Happy Hours" in the Hudson Valley, New York area. In addition to owning and running her businesses, she's running her home life as well with husband, Frank, and children Billy (13) and Julia (11). "Customers have reported better sleep and less swelling in knees, hips and shoulders. They’ve also reported increased mobility, which encourages more movement/walking and, in turn, desired weight loss." ~ Mary Therese Yamamoto Mary Therese answered readers' questions on the following Ask an Expert topic: The Health Benefits Associated with CBD |
Mary Therese discusses the inspiration behind founding CannActive Life, what she enjoys most about the business, and how her products have helped others.
What was the inspiration behind founding CannActive Life?
I found CBD at a time when my body was changing and reacting differently to aging and the cold weather. I wasn't thrilled about taking on a regimen of prescription medications with no end in sight. As I started to learn more about CBD, I realized the industry was male-dominated and did not focus on athletes. I wanted to change that. It helped me so much with my daily mobility, mood, and comfort levels. I wanted to share that with other women who are active, too.
What do you enjoy most about your business?
I enjoy connecting with people and hearing their stories and how CBD (the products I sell specifically) has changed their lives for the better. I'm very proud of the work I do to educate the public about my products, and this feedback validates the time and effort I've spent to get here.

What certifications do you hold?
I am a Licensed Hemp Retailer through the State of New York. I also have a certificate in Cannabis Education through the Cannabis Coaching Institute. The World Health Organization (WHO) reports, "In humans, CBD exhibits no effects indicative of any abuse or dependence potential…To date, there is no evidence of public health related problems associated with the use of pure CBD." Please explain the difference between CBD and THC. There are over 100 identified Cannabinoids in the Cannabis Sativa Plant. CBD and THC seem to get the most attention because of their active working properties. While CBD is positively perceived as the ‘Good Guy,’ with anti-inflammatory properties that have won the hearts of many, her ‘Rebel Cousin’ THC is the one that gets you high. There are no hallucinatory properties in CBD, but when you mix some THC in, there is a trace. |

The 2018 Farm Bill removed hemp and derivatives of cannabis with low concentrations of THC (no more than 0.3 percent dry weight) from the Controlled Substances Act. This bill granted the production and sale of hemp products, which abide by US FDA standard requirements, alongside food, dietary supplements, veterinary drugs, and cosmetics. Do your products contain a label that shows they abide by these requirements?
In order to get banking and licensed by the State of New York, I had to have all products inspected and labeled properly. Keep this in mind when you see CBD at gas stations.

Where are your products made?
My products are made at family run farms in both Boulder, Colorado and Florida. I pride myself on the Hemp being USDA Certified Organic. China uses hemp to clean their dirty soil, and they make products out of that hemp. There are heavy metals and toxins in these products, and this is why it’s imperative to know where the products are coming from. Is it safe to buy CBD at gas stations? No. There is no regulation on these products. This is why you hear about people getting sick or high from them. You should not only know your direct source, but also your source's source. I put all of this on my labels. |
Some studies show that CBD helps to reduce anxiety, insomnia, arthritis, seizures, chronic muscle and joint pain, etc. You’ve attended conferences and have done a ton of research on the products you sell. What have you learned about the many benefits of CBD use, and what have your customers shared with you?
Sometimes people try it for one solution and find that it helps in other ways. For instance, some customers might try one of the products for better sleep and find that they also have more energy throughout the day. Some people have shared that they realized their knees weren't swelling up like they used to, and some have shared that they don’t react as negatively to stressful situations. It's a gift that keeps on giving.
Customers have reported better sleep and less swelling in knees, hips and shoulders. They’ve also reported increased mobility, which encourages more movement/walking and, in turn, desired weight loss. It's wonderful once you don't have discomfort and can move better. It all ties together and keeps us healthier overall.

How has CBD helped you personally?
I work out approximately nine times a week, sometimes high intensity. CBD calms me down, helps my aching muscles post-workout, eliminates my use of Advil, alleviates premenstrual symptoms, etc.

Are there any side effects you are aware of?
Some people may be more sensitive, experiencing slight drowsiness. This is why I suggest to initially try it before going to sleep to gauge your personal tolerance. If you take a Full Spectrum product (small trace of THC), you may have a reaction if your body doesn't tolerate THC well.
Are there any drug interactions people should be aware of?
CBD is processed through the liver, so it's always prudent to speak to your healthcare provider about any supplements you are taking.
Is there a suggested maximum dosage?
It really depends on the person, the person's size and an individual’s tolerance. I advise to "Start Low and Go Slow." Our Endocannabinoid System is built to work with the plant. You cannot overdose on CBD because there are not enough cannabinoid receptors in the brain to allow that. In comparison, opioids induce respiratory depression and can shut down one’s ability to breathe.
You donate 10% of your profits to charitable organizations. Which ones do you support and why?
I support the American Heart Association. My late father had heart issues, so this organization is particularly important to me. I walk for the organization each year (in April), and I am proud of that. I also support Wounded Warrior Project – my father was also a Veteran. Many Veterans can benefit from Cannabis remedies rather than pharmaceuticals for their PTSD. The Meant to Be, Up to Me organization helps to provide girls in Africa with daily necessities, such as clean water, and the organization is building a school for them. This is a reminder that we are truly blessed here in the United States and a way for me to give back.

Where do you find sanctuary?
I find sanctuary anywhere near water. I practice daily meditation and self-hypnosis, and my happy place is the sunrise on a beach. If I am not physically at a beach, this is where I 'go' when I get quiet with myself. It makes sense that I would be a water fitness instructor. I can't seem to stay away from water for too long!
